From Sharjah, the cultural capital of the UAE, Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council was established in 2015 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah. The Council aims to protect and preserve both tangible and intangible heritage crafts. It achieves this by empowering women artisans economically and socially, through capacity-building initiatives, including craft exchange programs, documentation and research dedicated to craft development.

Guided by the vision of Her Highness, the Council has cultivated various successful global partnerships and initiatives that led to producing numerous contemporary craft collections with the aim to safeguard and elevate traditional crafts for future generations across the UAE, MENASA, Central Asia and Southeast Asia regions. These initiatives are tailored to cater to children, youth, artists, designers, entrepreneurs, and craftspeople.

The Council has established itself as a pivotal reference in the craft sector, attaining recognition both regionally and globally. This recognition is attributed to the Council’s commitment to reviving crafts, skill development, meticulous craft documentation, and comprehensive research on manufacturing and consumption methods, fostering sustainability in its initiatives.

In recognition of its unparalleled efforts to preserve, promote and celebrate cultural heritage, UNESCO has selected Sharjah as part of its Creative Cities Network in «City of Crafts and Folk Art» for the craft of Talli in 2019. This achievement highlights Irthi’s pivotal role in sustaining and preserving Emirati heritage crafts in contemporary ways.
